The Southwest Paso Horse Association is a collection of Paso breed horse owners , breeders, and trainers who are interested in preserving , improving , or just enjoying the quality of the spanish Paso breeds.
The breeds that are part of the association are the Paso Fino, ( of the Columbian, or Puerto rican lines etc)Peruvian Paso, California Paso, Paso Largo, American Paint Paso, and the Paso Cross..
While the smoothness of the ride is the most recognizable benefit of the Paso, it is not all that endears the Paso horse to its admirers.Such qualities such as the Gait, Intelligence, Endurance, Friendliness, Brio, and the Desire To Perform are very much a part of the breed as is the Conformation. These traits are known to most if not all people familiar with the breed.
Careful breeding through the years has allowed the breed to maintain bloodlines and to pass on exceptional qualities, as well some other horse breed crossings have been tried to bring about other attributes in the way of color, size, etc.To this end there are some breeds and individual horses that are favored for breeding purposes. Although the Paso horse may have had its start in various parts of the world and are still all around the world, they have had a home in the history and geography of the Southwest and the SWPHA is put together with the idea of showcasing them and lending a voice to the Pasos of the southwest.
