BEAT THE HEAT
Submitted By Gay Sartore Wiks
With the summer heat fast approaching why not try a moonlight trail ride? Horses actually have better night vision than we humans do. There are many benefits ; cooler temperatures, no hunters or ATV's , with the sounds and serenity of the desert at night. It can be a very peaceful and enlightening experience.
Although it is not recommended for everyone, Domingo and I have ridden out into the BLM several times on our own at night.just to relax. There is nothing like the feeling of just you and your mount.
For an organized night ride with multiple riders, an able trail boss and drag rider with night time trail experience are essential. Communication is also extremely important, (calling out to other riders ), as is carrying a flashlight (preferrably with a blue, red, or green filter ), a cell phone and cyalumes ( light sticks). Flashlights should be used with discrection as sudden bright light can spook a horse. Light colored shirts or blouses are suggested. Also an idea would be a reflector or intermitant blinker that could attach to the breat collar.
Trail rides should generally start a half hour before dusk, and could last one and a half to two hours.
